The California Highway Patrol reports that motorcycle fatalities are on the rise in California. In recent years, we have seen fluctuations in the number of accidents, due to the increased use of cell phones and texting devices, as well as the laws that prohibit such behaviors. Accidents also tend to increase around the holidays, due to greater traffic and a greater number of impaired drivers. But this recent rise is being attributed to other factors entirely.
The CHP reports that the increase is largely due to greater interest in motorcycles. In this difficult economy, the fuel efficiency of motorcycles can be an enticing motivator, and in fact, motorcycle registrations have nearly doubled over the last decade. There are currently more than 1 million motorcycle riders in California, and more bikes means more accidents.
According to the CHP data, the state has seen a 20 percent increase in the number of motorcyclists killed between 2010 and 2011 (from 348 to 411). This is the first increase since 2008, during which 529 cyclists died as opposed 465 in the previous year.
The CHP is now calling on motorists to focus on strategies for personal safety. A large percentage of these tragedies occur at intersections, so motorists are cautioned to always take a second look before proceeding. We all have to share the road, and too many motorists fail to notice the motorcyclists who pass.
"By looking twice, you may save the life of a motorcyclist," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow cautioned Californians when announcing the rise in motorcycle accidents. In the decade ending in 2007, motorcyclist fatalities increased by more than 130 percent, and biker injuries increased by more than 75 percent. Clearly we have a lot of work to do in raising awareness and making the roads a safer place for motorcyclists.
